A guide to Tree Preservation Orders and Permission for Tree Works

West Hill Parish Council has created a quick guide to Tree Preservation Orders (TPO's) and how to apply for permission to carry out maintenance work.  East Devon District Council is the relevant authority and is the decision maker.

West Hill is a rural, woodland village. The special character of the village owes much to the tree lined lanes and extensive planting of trees and shrubs both around it’s houses.  As a result many of West Hill’s trees and woodland are the subject of Tree Preservation Orders.  It's advisable to check if your trees have a TPO before you start any work on them.

Our quick guide sets out

  • how to check if your trees are subject to a TPO
  • your responsibilities
  • how to apply for permission for maintenance work
  • how to find further information on TPO's on EDDC's website
