We need more Councillors
West Hill needs your help. As you know, on 4th May 2023, East Devon residents went to the Polls to elect Parish and District Councillors. In West Hill Parish, the election was uncontested because only three candidates stood and there were seven seats. This means that the three candidates were duly elected unopposed. So the Parish Council currently consists of Della Cannings QPM, Alison Carr and Neil Bromley and there are four vacancies.
Why does it matter? Aren't three Councillors enough?
Three Councillors is the minimum number required for West Hill Parish Council to function. But this means that if just one Councillor were to be absent from a meeting, the meeting would be inquorate and no decisions could be made.
It would also be better to have more people representing our community and providing a wider range of views. Debate and discussion lead to better decision making.
What happens next - co-option
The new Council will try to co-opt 4 more Councillors. We know there is a huge pool of talent amongst our residents that could be harnessed for the benefit of the community. We appeal to West Hill residents aged 18+ from all backgrounds and abilities to apply. You don’t need previous experience as you will be offered training.
